Case Study #1

Project Lead: Jack Berry

Project Summary: Jack Berry of Berry Consulting successfully cleaned and disinfected a 24-inch ductile iron water supply line following a storm that deposited debris into the pipeline. The project was completed on time, on budget, and allowed for the supply line to be brought back into service.

Challenge: A sudden storm washed several yards of debris into a 24-inch ductile iron water supply line. Traditional flushing methods would have required significant water flow (20,000 to 30,000 gallons per minute) for several minutes, potentially causing damage to the pipeline.

Solution: Jack Berry devised a plan to clean and disinfect the pipeline using a series of four poly pigs (cleaning devices) pushed through the line with 200 gallons per minute of flushing water treated with pool shock (NSF 61 certified).

Process:

  1. A series of 1-2 pound poly pigs were inserted into the pipe inlet.
  2. A flow-through plug was inflated and supplied with clean water.
  3. Each pig pushed debris out of the pipeline, with the later pigs encountering progressively clearer water.
  4. The final pig cleaned and disinfected the line.

Benefits:

  • Achieved successful cleaning and disinfection.
  • Completed on time and within budget.
  • Avoided potential damage from high-flow flushing methods.

Case Study #2

Study #2

 Project Lead: Jack Berry

Project Summary: Jack Berry successfully cleaned and disinfected a newly installed 8-inch ductile iron water supply line. Traditional cleaning methods, including multiple flushings, chemical injections, and tests, had failed.

Challenge: Despite multiple cleaning attempts, the new water supply line remained unclean. Traditional methods were ineffective, requiring Jack Berry's intervention.

Solution: Jack Berry devised a plan to clean and disinfect the pipeline using eight poly pigs (cleaning devices) pushed through the line with less than 200 gallons per minute of flushing water treated with pool shock (NSF 61 certified). He also secured approval from the water district for an 8-inch hydrant branch to launch the pigs.

Process:

  1. A series of 6-to-12-pound poly pigs were inserted into the hydrant branch.
  2. A flow-through plug was inflated and supplied with clean water.
  3. Each pig pushed debris out of the pipeline, with subsequent pigs encountering progressively less debris.
  4. Following cleaning, a test was conducted, and the line passed inspection, allowing development to proceed.

Benefits:

  • Successfully cleaned a new pipeline that previous methods failed to address.
  • Completed the project efficiently, avoiding further delays.
  • Berry Consulting possesses the resources to clean and disinfect smaller diameter pipes (4", 6") on short notice, with slightly longer lead times for larger pigs.
